In the ever-evolving landscape of education, the integration of technology into teaching and learning processes has become a focal point. One framework that has drawn significant attention for its practical approach to technology integration is the SAMR Model. Developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, the SAMR Model provides a layered view of technology's role in education, categorising its use into four levels: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (Puentedura, 2006).
Substitution: The Starting Point
At the Substitution level, technology acts as a direct substitute for traditional tools, with no functional change. For instance, using a word processor instead of pen and paper falls into this category.
Augmentation: Enhancing Traditional Methods
Augmentation takes a step further by not only substituting but also enhancing the traditional methods. For example, a student using a word processor benefits from the added functionalities like spell check and grammar suggestions, which are not available with pen and paper. This level begins to reveal the potential of technology in enriching educational experiences.
Modification: A Shift in Teaching and Learning
Modification, the third level of the SAMR Model, starts to transform the educational process (Puentedura, 2014). Here, technology is used to redesign parts of the learning tasks. An example is students collaborating on a shared online document, which allows for real-time collaboration and feedback, a task that is not feasible with traditional methods.
Redefinition: Creating New Possibilities
The Redefinition level is where technology allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable (Puentedura, 2014). An example could be students engaging in a global online science fair, interacting with peers worldwide, an experience that transcends geographical boundaries and traditional learning scopes.

The SAMR Model provides a structured approach to integrating technology, enabling educators to enhance learning experiences progressively (Hamilton et al., 2016).
